North America Is Sobering Up

Hrmmmmmm… Canada too…

Looks like the kids are driving it? I suspect it’s probably because they can’t afford it… and I wonder how many are doing pot instead? I do not understand or know anything about the pot industry (legal and illegal). And as for the Canadian gubbimint… I dunno how much faith can be put in the Statscan numbers.

I was going to go down to the liquor store and buy a few bottles for Christmas but the wife doesn’t drink. And I dunno what it is but I’m not feeling the need for a Christmas tipple this year at all…? Depending on whose numbers you used, I was a full blown alcoholic at one point. Then one day I just quit cold turkey, for no real reason, really… No DT symptoms whatsoever. I dunno even why I quit? Drinking was just something I didn’t need to do anymore. The hangovers were getting more brutal as I aged and maybe that was a bit of a factor… long story short - I really dunno why I quit, never mind anyone else!

  1. It's been a little more than three weeks. Cruising past The Aisle in the grocery store has, so far, been surprisingly easy. Dr.Google says that feeling seriously fatigued for a while is to be expected. The body is healing. Started at 16,I'll be 71 in a coupla weeks. I was putting away copious amounts of Tulamore Dew,and some beer. The cost was getting prohibitive. Anyway, I just got enough and stopped Wanting it. Damn good thing, too. Cuz the water heater just Shat the Bed,,and the savings from not drinking just the last few weeks means the savings account won't be taking the whole hit And I'm saving money now.
Now, if I could just develop a deep seated hatred for cigarettes, I'd be in great shape.

    1. Well good for you, J. But… yeah. It’s amazing how easy it is to walk away. I think the hardcore alcoholics have more than just medical chemical dependence going on….

  2. Its because of the huge number of recent arrivals into NA. Muslims don't drink alcohol; neither do Sikh's though the often own the liquir stores

  3. The kids in skewl were taught that alcohol is bad and cutting your junk off is good. Eventually we will need to take a deep dive in to the education / lunatic production system and find out what is happening that makes people want to return a murder people they do not know.

  4. Marijuana, crack, and meth are replacing booze.

  5. It is shocking how cheap alcohol is in Europe. I have traveled through Italy, France & Spain and it's 2 - 5 euros for a nice local red wine or a 6-pack of beer. Spirits were 5 - 10 euros for the good stuff. Best of all - you can buy it anywhere including every supermarket. Never came across drunks & homeless under bridges etc - but - I don't go to big cities. Wine was part of lunch and dinner, and NOBODY drank more than one or maybe two glasses at a meal. NEVER afterwards, never alone. Always during the meal, and with company. Drinking to excess was just never done.

A bottle of drinkable cheap red here in Australia is ~$20 ($10 for almost undrinkable reds), $22 - $30 for a six pack of beer and $50 upwards for spirits. We Aussies usually drink for effect !

    1. Yup. It’s why Ibstarted home brewing. It was more fun, less money and a better product. I’m actually astonished that more people don’t do it…

  6. Unlike alcohol, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a hallucinogenic. It's the stuff that pot smokers crave, and it's used medically to relieve chronic pain or nausea caused by chemotherapy. You can actually find marijuana plants growing wild in Michigan. People call it Michigan ditch weed, and it's worth what you pay for it.

Growing real, salable marijuana is hard work. It requires a lot of knowledge and practical experience. For instance, only the female plants are usable. Then there's the amount of sunlight, humidity, water - all kinds of things. Back in the bad old days when you could get twenty to life for the possession of one seed, the THC content was about one to three percent. Now it's around thirty percent THC, and a good chemist can get it up to 90%.

During pot prohibition many farmers grew it as a cash crop, and they'd make around $1200 - $1500 a year. That was the kids' Christmas and a luxury or two. The way things are now very few people grow their own when they can buy it, and the State government is complaining about a lack of sales. Well, it's cost. The government charges too much.

I expect that magic mushrooms (psilocyban) and mescaline will be legalized next.

  7. OT Glen. Is Gab down or have they now gone to viewing it without joining to be able to view only to those with accounts? Can't find any news or info on this elsewhere. Thank you!

  8. Legal pot has displaced booze every place, every time. For me, by comparison, pot is so much more enjoyable - obviously I am not alone on that. Getting to the point in life where neither one really beats being un-stoned. Learning to appreciate the natural high.

  9. I think it's mostly social, with the secondary availability of marijuana and other drugs. Young people don't seem to hang out in large groups and such as much as I remember I did as a youngster. When I drank, it was at parties and with friends. Keggers, tailgate parties, watching football with friends, cookouts, etc. Even taverns are basically constant low-grade cocktail parties for regulars.

Nowadays, kids seem to do things alone or with just one or two others. People drink in big groups. People do drugs alone or in small groups. Martinis and Fortnite don't seem to mix.

  10. More people are distilling at home and not buying from a govt store. Fewer retail sales and unknown amounts of home brew.

  11. Damn, I'm always going against the grain. it wasn't my choice. All my other organs are slowly dying and they told my liver to stop slacking.

    More for me...

  12. Cost is a big issue. With quality Bourbon, I can drink $50 a night if I put my mind to it. That shit adds up. But still, I'm trying to do my part.

  13. Hood Canal, Northwest Washington, is a great vacay area. In a QFC all the liquor is locked up because, with a new tax, liquor is too expensive, easily 2X what it costs in Az. No wonder people go marijuana.

    1. I wonder, W. Up here in Canada, our former Prime Minister - Faggot Face - legalized weed. When the legislation first passed… everyone opened pot shops hoping to get rich selling drugs to their neighbours. Many didn’t survive much more than a year… I guess govt regulated pot is not cheap either… who’da thunk it?
The pot heads must be buying off the black market still…?

  14. I laid off the suds after I woke up one morning with my skin being a slight green tint and when I looked at my abdomen, my liver was waving a little white flag of defeat.
