Finished

So there she is… with a utility pouch affixed to the lower portion of the sheath, and the upper nylon part rebuilt in leather. I’m a hack at lashing… I just used 550 paracord to lash it to my ass pack… and spring loaded cord stoppers to retain it. Secondary retention is by a caribiner up top.

I’m not liking it or trusting it, really…? Are any of you guys squaddies that are up to speed on molle load bearing vests and plate carriers? It seems to me those guys go for elastic shock cord for chores like this. I’ve also seen something called “friction lock cord”… any of you guys ever use any of that?

Inside the pouch I have a re-purposed plastic spice bottle to hold a bic lighter and some fire stater material… it’s not much room… but I don’t need much. What would you use for compact starter material?  I’ve been using birch bark… but it rakes up too much space! I need something that I can pack in that bottle beside the bic.

I wonder how that crap will all ride when I get on my cross country skis…?

We’re gonna find out soon! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

I am expecting a complete fiasco… I’ll let y’all know how it goes…

  1. Cotton balls impregnated with petroleum jelly make great fire starters. No crude jokes at my expense, Filthie!

  3. Round cotton makeup pads impregnated with wax for fire starters. Waterproof, can be cut, and fitted in your spice jar.

  5. Was taught this trick years ago. Dryer lint. Just peel it off the screen and compress it into a ball. Keep doing that till you have a golf ball sized one. Wrap it in a 6"x6" piece of aluminum foil. Then dip Q-Tips in White Vaseline. Unwrap the foil and pull apart the lint, put it in the fire hole in the foil and start striking sparks, when it catches, light one of the Q-Tips, they will burn up to two minutes even in a wind. I have 4 of them in my pack and it takes up very little space. Those lint balls can give you alot of dry tinder.

  7. Keep in mind a butane lighter is unreliable if the lighter gets cold. I'd recommend swapping the lighter for strike anywhere storm proof matches (avoid Diamond's Green Tip ones...they're useless and I can't trust them to light on my woodstove top) and keep your lighter in an inside pocket. Go to the local drug emporium & get one of those aluminum waterproof keychain pill containers. Grab a cheap magnesium block and drill a few holes in it. SLOWLY & LIGHTLY, preferably outside. Gather the chips and fill the container. Just dump a few out onto any of the ideas above if or when you need them. Faster and easier than trying to scrape that block when you're wet, shivering & desperate.

  9. If you're smart - and as our gracious host I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt - you'll carry more than one method. Preferably, three.

    1. Sure do. Lifeboat Matches in the container with spare striker. Couple of butane lighters, a butane mini-torch, a magnesium block w/striker and a magnifying glass. All in a small waterproof box.
