It was a chilly one on Dawg Patrol this morn. It was only -20C - if that…but my beloved Peavey Mart specials done gave up on me.
They’re just chit house suede gloves with a fleece lining … but they trapped the air inside and kept me toasty right down to -30C and even a little lower. But after years of hard use… the fleece packs up, loses its loft - and therefore its ability to trap air. They’re done.
Years ago my Filson winter gloves finally crapped out too and I bought mitts to replace them. The classic military arctic mitt with the “snot spot” were a guaranteed winner in my opinion at the time and I spent good money on a brand new pair… but they didn’t work at all for me… my hands just froze in them. I finally latched on to the gloves above and was happy ever since.
But now… it’s procurement time. I figured I’d get a high end glove and theoretically have a pair that last me the rest of my life.
Hell’s bells. I’m not going to Antarctica or up Everest with the yuppies! So I sat back and re-set…and started thinking about the snot-spot mitts again. They work for everyone else… why not me…? I pulled them out and idly thunk about it until the rotten wood started to burn…and my thinking meat warmed up and began to function.
The damned things were tight. They were mediums. They didn’t work because they couldn’t trap air. FFS.
I pulled the removable liners out, and swapped in a medium weight glove … and praise God…it worked.
If you’re going to buy military snot-spots… I really recommend that ya try them on first. You want them large so you can fit a light AND medium weight glove underneath. I I think I’m good to -20C … but might need another layer for -30.
Stay warm you guys. It’s starting to get chilly out there…
