I dunno if modern washers connect to the innernet or not… but everything else does. I seriously wonder if this old washer design could be resurrected? Given the way modern washers calve and die in 36 months or less… something that could to be counted on to work when ya turn it on would sell like hotcakes I’d think.
My 25 year old Maytag finally had the bun. Every 6 or 7 years there was a bearing that had to be replaced like clockwork… and then it was good for another 6 or 7 years. They don’t make the bearing anymore. The wife is a bit of an expert on those through work… and she can’t source them either. We now hang our clothes to dry in the basement just like they did in the 60s when I as a kid… and I dunno about the wife but it doesn’t bother me at all. If I remember I’ll put up a clothes line in the yard next summer.

The first image, memories. One of my Grandmas lived to almost 100, had one of those since before my time (1964), it never failed.

Get an Aussie Hills Hoist, if that marvel of engineering ever made it to the Colony without Cricket.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was stationed in Kodiak back in the early '80's the fishermen were still using wringer washers because they could handle just about anything and just... didn't... break! At that time, Maytag was still making them!
ReplyDeleteYeah... The drum roller bearings... Those and the drum belt were the ONLY things that went bad on those and the Kenmore dryers, which were made by Maytag.
My LG washer and dryer do indeed connect to a phone app through the 'net. The app's not needed to run the machines, but it does alert you when loads finish or when the washer goes out of balance or something. It also keeps track of run time on both. The LG's replaced a Kenmore W&D set that I'd bought used 20 years before for $300.00. The washer drum rusted through where it connected to the agitator shaft. A replacement was unobtainium, so I had to replace the whole machine. I just went for a new pair. Just an FYI; I'm getting REALLY good performance from the LG appliances. I have the LG washer and dryer, a "Kenmore Elite" fridge, made by LG, and an LG over-stove microwave. DON'T buy SAMSUNG appliances! Their electronics are great. Their appliances SUCK!!! They will break and break and break again! I replaced my existing kitchen appliances with Samsung; fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher. The fridge went bad in three years. The microwave died a year later. The dishwasher's been repaired three times; the motherboard, the water pump, and the inlet water valve. The latter was GREAT fun, as it didn't shut off all the way, and flooded the kitchen!
If you DO get a "modern" (CPU controlled) washer and dryer, or any other appliance, save yourself some post-blackout/brownout/power surge heartache; plug them into surge protector outlet strips!
If you can find a Speed Queen where you are...that is the way to go.
