100 years ago my father in law was trying to thin out his hoard of plunder and he came across an old coffee can of 40 year old CIL 22 shorts. He was a pack rat that could never bear to throw anything away but he didn’t shoot much so he gave them to me. At the time I was shooting my Ruger Single Six and keeping that ammo-gobbling pig going took every spare cent I had! The .22 shorts were okay because I was still building the basics of pistolcraft skills. 25 yards indoors, slow fire punching paper. Everyone thought I was nuts but I found it soothing and rewarding. When I ran out of the .22 shorts I decided to do a bulk buy on Winchester Wildcats. I bought 3 cases (5,000 rounds each) and that hoard lasted me 15 years. I burned up the first case in a year but then graduated to centre fire guns and played with the 22s sporadically after that.
The 22 shorts and Wildcats were great for informal practice. Ya buy a metric tonne for practice and for the kids, and save the Eley Tennex and serious target ammo for the tourneys. But…I haven’t seen 22 shorts around in a coon’s age. I actually went looking for it several years back but ended up buying five or six thousand American Eagle red box stuff. I basically had to - none of my repeating magazine rifles could handle shorts. I’ll probly never buy another 22 but if I did… I’d love one of these:
I watched the gun slinging beardo and the real star of the show - the Boy Scout…and started thinking about secluded river banks out in the country, maybe a dirt hill on the farm…or secret gopher patches…and Saturday afternoons. It makes me wonder what in hell I’m doing here! Gawd - a Saturday afternoon plinking session would be SO good for the soul. A cooler full of pop, some snacks…and a coffee can full of 22 shorts. I’d be king of the world! Ughhh!
What are YOU doing here you stupid old stubfart? Maybe you have better things to do too!
😂
Mr. Glen Filthie, I think you must be looking over my shoulder! (Kinda gives me the creeps...)

DeleteMy first powder burning gun was a Marlin 81 bolt actionin the mid '70's. The under barrel tube magazine (if I remember correctly) held 16 long rifle or 21 shorts. Most shot was long rifle (Winchester Wildcat - Federal Lightning) but limited amounts of Short was used. In the long barrel, the shorts were very quiet. Like a very strong .22 pellet gun.
