So I’ve been wavering about my deer gun for the upcoming season. My choices this year are my beloved Ruger No.1 in 243, or the Ruger Tupperware Rifle Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 223. I’m pretty ticked off about it all, actually. The .223 was finally legalized for hunting in Alberta and to be frank, I consider it marginal for deer. The Tupperware Rifle is a carbine and although it’s a borderline tack driver…I’ll lose some velocity because it’s a 16” carbine. I will have to hold my shots to 100 yards or thereabouts. We are hunting in farm country so longer shots are possible which I won’t be able to capitalize on with the little sniper. If I’m shooting at paper I can shoot as far as I want. When you have to be sporting and humane… that range shrinks, big time.
The Ruger single shot 243 IS a deer gun and can take me out to 200m, arguably out to 300… but for me 200m is as far as I’d trust myself and the modest calibre. I frown on long range shots at game and have always turned my nose up at them. I believe in getting close, and putting them down with one.
But then I remembered - our dipshit liberal gov’t has banned the No.1 too. Apparently the thinking is that the No.1 can be chambered in some seriously large calibres, and the gun grabbers think that it’s possible that a failed social experiment might get one… and start engaging in anti-tank and anti-materiel work. My classic single shot hunting rifle is now a threat to public safety! I’m serious. That’s how those shitlib fuckers think. I’m at the point of total noncompliance now. I told those shit heads to shove their fake flu pandemic and vaccines and I’ll do it with my guns too. Because fuck them, that’s why.
But… I’d hate to lose that beauty to some over-zealous fish cop. I shoot it at the range all the time and no one’s said anything, so who knows. I think the entire sport shooting community is fed up with Ottawa, and their idiotic power grabs. I’ll just leave that right there, lest I be reduced to foaming at the mouth and Fed-poosting. Legally I’m stuck with the 223. I have some big BPCR guns, but… they’re more range toys than anything else.
Another option is another gun. The Ruger Tupperware guns are available in bigger calibres. Apparently they’re available in a Scout Rifle configuration now at extremely attractive prices. But hell’s bells…I need another gun like I need a hole in the head. I’d have to buy reloading dies, expand my stocks of bullets, etc etc.
It’s entirely possible I’ll fill my tag with a bow and the whole can of worms will be a non-issue. Who knows… the wind, it blows, between my toes…
UPDATE/EDIT
Some fact checking reveals that classic sporting calibres are not banned in the Ruger No.1…just the big calibres that frighten liberal fart suckers. That’s all I need to know, so yes… I’ll be taking my beloved rifle into the field. I am still infatuated with the Tupperware gun though.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
You got to be motherfucking kidding me ?!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour fucking govt banned a single shot rifle??
I'd be less concerned about shooting deer and more concerned about shooting politicians, but I guess that's not where you want the conversation to go.
As far as shooting deer, the answer is simple. 30-30 Winchester. As if you'd ever need another caliber.
I stand corrected and will poost the edit.
DeleteSuper large calibres are not allowable in the No.1 (can’t tell ya which ones, and I’m not going to delve into it because at this point I don’t care - if I wanted to re-chamber my gun to such a calibre I will do it and the liberals can take a long hard suck on it). But I guess the classic hunting calibres have been exempted.
Didnt our premier say to ignore the feds gun rules and that any lawfully purchased firearm can be used in AB.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how well the mounties would follow that given they are federal.
Exile1981
Yes. The legality of that is up in the air, but I don’t want to get tied up in a trial case for that issue…
DeleteExile, you are full of crap.
DeleteRCMP police officers working provincial policing duties are directly and solely subject to the directions of the provinces in which they work, as per the contract the province signed with the RCMP. They take their orders directly from K Division HQ in Edmonton, who in turn take their orders directly from the Solicitor General at the Alberta Legislature. The buck stops there. That's why the RCMP didn't seize any firearms in the late 90s, when the Chretien government passed Bill C68; it was because Ralph Klein said 'no effing way'. As far as I am aware, there are no plans for ANY police service in the Provonce of Alberta to seize any firearms solely for the purposes of this OIC passed by Big Trudy.
That being said: if you don't want to lose any of your guns and you are a law abiding citizen, then my advice to you is REMAIN A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. Meaning don't do stupid shit that'll draw the police's attention over to you like, say, beating your wife and kids, or dealing in drugs/stolen propererty or dealing in kiddie porn....all of which I have personally had to seize firearms over in the past.
Coles Notes Version: If you're gonna be a fucking moron, you're gonna lose your guns. Tough shit.
Check yer spam, I posted early AM and it hasn't shown up in your AAAAAAAAAdmonton posting. In case it's history, I was letting you know that I found a 243 Ruger Tupper, for $330 and a 308 Ruger Tupper, for $340! Add $43 to $59 (depending on how much they charge for background check) after tax and background check. Found them in the Nashville, Tn. Armslist. That's cheap enough to make it worth it to move to Tennessee! HURRY!
ReplyDeleteIf I decide to actually assassinate a poor deer, I'd likely take it with an 10.5 inch, AR pistol, loaded with Hornady 55gr, Barrier Blind ballistic tips, because that's my EDC load. When I walk my 26 acres, that's what I take, because it's light and small (I'm old). My max range would be 50-75 yds, IF I had the perfect angle.
If I'm going to intentionally ambush a deer, I'll be using one of the following, my 1965ish, 308 Savage 99, the 1943, 6.5mm Swedish Mauser or my 1st gen, 18" 308 Ruger Tupper (it's the Compact version, with an 18" pencil barrel), in that order of likelihood. In my woods, the longest shot will be less than 150 yards max, but likely less than 100.
Hrrrmmm - nothing in File 13…? But…thanks for the re-poast Mike!👍
DeleteHow does the 308 Tupperware shoot? I’m watching the OyTube reviews - and granted, some of those guys are pinheads and noise makers… but some calibres seem to shoot waaaaaaay better than others. Not that I’m going to buy another gun… 🥴
.223 is not a deer rifle and figured you'd know that. Dad used to shoot deer with a .22 magnum in the head mind you but the
ReplyDelete243 is a better option.
I shot my first deer with a borrowed .243 #1 back in '77. That was a fine rifle and I regret never getting around to buying one of my own. I went to an auction of an enormous private collection a few years back intending to buy one. The ones they had in the common sporting calibers were going for 2-3K. Surprisingly, both to me and the auctioneers the couple of rifles in "safari" calibers went for much less : 7 or 8 hundred. So I'm still without a #1, although I do have a #3 in .223 I bought for my son to bag his first deer with back when he was 5. It did the job and he graduated to .308 very quickly.
