So I’ve been wavering about my deer gun for the upcoming season. My choices this year are my beloved Ruger No.1 in 243, or the Ruger Tupperware Rifle Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 223. I’m pretty ticked off about it all, actually. The .223 was finally legalized for hunting in Alberta and to be frank, I consider it marginal for deer. The Tupperware Rifle is a carbine and although it’s a borderline tack driver…I’ll lose some velocity because it’s a 16” carbine. I will have to hold my shots to 100 yards or thereabouts. We are hunting in farm country so longer shots are possible which I won’t be able to capitalize on with the little sniper. If I’m shooting at paper I can shoot as far as I want. When you have to be sporting and humane… that range shrinks, big time.
The Ruger single shot 243 IS a deer gun and can take me out to 200m, arguably out to 300… but for me 200m is as far as I’d trust myself and the modest calibre. I frown on long range shots at game and have always turned my nose up at them. I believe in getting close, and putting them down with one.
But then I remembered - our dipshit liberal gov’t has banned the No.1 too. Apparently the thinking is that the No.1 can be chambered in some seriously large calibres, and the gun grabbers think that it’s possible that a failed social experiment might get one… and start engaging in anti-tank and anti-materiel work. My classic single shot hunting rifle is now a threat to public safety! I’m serious. That’s how those shitlib fuckers think. I’m at the point of total noncompliance now. I told those shit heads to shove their fake flu pandemic and vaccines and I’ll do it with my guns too. Because fuck them, that’s why.
But… I’d hate to lose that beauty to some over-zealous fish cop. I shoot it at the range all the time and no one’s said anything, so who knows. I think the entire sport shooting community is fed up with Ottawa, and their idiotic power grabs. I’ll just leave that right there, lest I be reduced to foaming at the mouth and Fed-poosting. Legally I’m stuck with the 223. I have some big BPCR guns, but… they’re more range toys than anything else.
Another option is another gun. The Ruger Tupperware guns are available in bigger calibres. Apparently they’re available in a Scout Rifle configuration now at extremely attractive prices. But hell’s bells…I need another gun like I need a hole in the head. I’d have to buy reloading dies, expand my stocks of bullets, etc etc.
It’s entirely possible I’ll fill my tag with a bow and the whole can of worms will be a non-issue. Who knows… the wind, it blows, between my toes…
