Filthie’s Daddy Issues

My father committed two crimes I will never forgive him for: he sold my 1971 GMC 1/2 ton from under me when I was 16. That alone is grounds for justifiable homo-cide… ask JL if ya don’t believe me.

Then he sold “my” pristine 1964 MF tractor. Its original owner went all out with it. The hydraulics on the front end loader worked at the speed of thought. When Pop got bored with it I just helped myself. I loved that thing! But Pop traded it in on a fuggin (hork, spit!) Case.

*in a peevish high pitched falsetto*

“It’s got a CAB, Glen. With HEAT. And AC in the summer!”

I just glowered hatefully back at him for that!!! I’m still mad about it!!! People talk about how the cowboys and pioneers won the west but I disagree. I think the west was truly civilized by these little MFs, JDs, 9Ns and their like.

I’d give my right arm to have either of them back today. I suppose I could always go out and buy my own damned classics, right? I wonder how much that little tractor costs today…?

  1. Padded seat? Padded seat! Holy Luxury Batman. Real tractors had metal seats with holes in them for ventilation. No wonder dad thought he needed heat and a/c, corrupted by the padded seat.

  2. Well, if US used tractor prices are any indicator, you'll be going back to work, or having garage sales, offing your valuable stool (good shit) and "re-aligning" yer priorities.
Just look at pictures and day dream of better days, like I do, thinking about my 1st F-100, a '65, that I upgraded in '74. My 1st, perfectly wonderful wife, got it in the divorce in '76. I don't resent her, I was a DICK with ears. I learned my lesson, for my 2nd perfectly wonderful wife. Still going strong, 49 years later.
My last Ford is a '74, Super Camper Special, F-350, with 460, 4bbl, 4.10 posi rear end. It gets 5-6 mpg, downhill, straightaway and tailwind, with the engine turned off. It's not pretty, but it has no cancer. It's not very practical without my tree service.

  3. My Parents did the same thing - but mine was a 68 Camaro. Not even a SS. It had a 327 instead of a 350. Went off camping with some friends, came back and it was gone. They bought a white Pontiac J2000 to replace it with. ( that's right, the still wanted the teenager to have a car - but apparently not that one - no other reason for the change. I was 18 and had been driving the handme down Camaro for 2 years at that point. ) Was I spoiled? Probably. But I knew damn well I was lucky to have it. Worst part is my Mother's Sister had 8 Boys. All older than I was and every last one of them asked to buy that car at one point or another. Did she sell it to one of them? No. She took the dealer tradein value. Yes. You heard me.

  4. For me it was a 64 impala with factory paint and an early 55 GMC pickup. Both mine, he just didn’t want to store them any longer.

  5. in the 60’s on our family farms near Lake Minnewaska, Cyrus and Starbuck MN. We had several Famalls, JD’s, MF’s and more from
3 generations of farming the 640 acres. It was very old school.
Now days it's all very hi tech and what used to take all of us to do over several months can be done by just 2 folks over 4 weeks.
2 weeks planting and 2 weeks harvesting give or take. It was cool having our own gas pumps and watching the gas fill the glass top etc. Good old times and great memories. I miss those days of old way before the innernut, dumbphones and distractions. We were working hard and eating well and building character.
