One of my Uncle's friends and son used a pair of bolt action Remington 788s in .22-250 to hunt deer with. They claimed aiming at the head was a safe bet - a quick instant death or clean miss. I don't know how much i trust that, but if within 100 yards on a still animal - I guess that would work. Does not fit my ethics though - missing is supposed to be waaay down probability. If not 90% sure of a hit, I won't shoot. Not worth the loss of a poorly hit animal - I owe it that much.
Ive hunted deer with .223. Sometimes i would hunt cornfield edges using a26” single shot with 40g v-max, head shots only. Its like a hand grenade ive pulled skull caps its just jello Ive also used 55g v-max on deer with neck shots, dont waste any meat 62g nosler partition on body shots works well also. You just have to know the limits. I killed my biggest deer with a .357. When i was younger and bigger was better i used a 7mm mag. I hit a deer at 75 yards once, i could put my fist through the exit hole. So, it just depends on the shooter and conditions. But… the average retard that shoots his rifle once a year and his shot group at 100y looks like he used buck shot, its a bad idea to legalize it. IMO
I was listening to this guy talk about using a 243 with 75 gn hand rolled cartridges to "ethically" take moose when it hit me - he has to be the voice of that childhood cartoon "Droopy Dog". You know, "Oh me, Oh my". https://youtu.be/6JWotX1ymGQ
.22 rimfire and headshots, from a truck window, with a flashlight, at night, on the side of a road. What? Illegal?? Well, crap, it works.
The above is theoretical only, for discussion purposes. Last time I actually hunted I had a 30-30 and my son used a .243 or .234 or something, youth cartridge, youth gun, traded it in long ago. But it dropped that buck in his tracks, it surely did. Right thru the heart. Might have been 75 yards at most. South Texas brush country is close in hunting.
