Jeez I wonder how much that cost…?
I think Poli was experimenting with slugs awhile ago and had even managed to make that odd roll crimp that slug shells need. I dunno if he got anywhere with it - I’ll have to ask. It’s one of those things where ya think it would be a piece of cake to do, but in real life it is a bit of a PITA. Any a youse guys doing it?
My thing is that the shotgun seasons around here also permit muzzle loaders and were I tempted, that’s the way I’d go. I used to have a Rem 870 that you could swap barrels on faster than you can think about it…but I gave it away to one of the kids at church. If I still had it I might attack the project out of pure spite and orneriness. Dammitandblast - it SHOULD be easy to reload these things…
😡
I started reloading shotgun shells when I was fourteen years old, under dads supervision of course. If one didn't crimp right I would drip wax over the opening to keep the shot in. D
ReplyDeleteI've seen a doohicky that chucks up in a drill to spin those roll crimps down. Don't remember what they're called or who made 'em, but you may be able to find something on the Goolag.
ReplyDeleteYep, roll crimp in the drill press.
ReplyDeleteI reloaded some Ballistic Products "Dangerous Game Slugs" in twenty-gauge.
ReplyDeleteCheddite hulls. Roll crimp tool from BPI. 23 grains of Longshot powder.

Not great shooting. I don't know how much was due to the sights and how much my incompetence and how much was due to inherent slop in the slugs/barrel
I've dropped a 500gr hornady slug (they look like a .177 pellet on steroids) into a standard 1 1/8 wad
ReplyDeletewith a trap load and used a petal crimp. worked fine.
Fairly accurate out to about 50-60 yds.
I loaded my own for a year or so, then sold my gear to one of the guys at the gun club. I was tired of skeet, and trap shooters are an anti-social bunch. I never loaded slugs, as I don't have the barrel for them. My brother, Shotgun Bob, damned near blew our father's old Ithaca M-37 Pump up by insisting it would shoot slugs. I had to explain to him three times about chokes, shot, and slugs. Bonehead. Well, now he knows.
ReplyDeleteI've loaded slugs, #4 buck, and 0000 aka quad aught loads. The quad aughts are 8 balls in a 3" hull over a double seal wad and corn meal buffer. Absolutely devastating inside 40 yards.
ReplyDeleteAll 8 balls inside a 19" circle. Winchester 1200 with a full fixed choke.
#4 buck is fun with a load with 19 balls that is going at 1300 fps. Like 19 of 30-30wcf rounds all hitting at once. Real crowd pleasers. Leaves a lasting impression as the wounds won't stop bleeding. Ask any pathologist.
If you want to learn about slug and ball loads, there is a dude on Ytube. Bubba RoundTree. RIP.
Several months ago, Eaton Rapids Joe made a great observation that having a rifle with ACTUAL front and rear iron sights and not just a bead helped a person shoot more consistently. That said, red dot electronic and scopes can also improve your slug - buckshot accuracy.
ReplyDeleteMost of Texas where I live is does not have shotgun / muzzleloader hunting regulations so standard long rifles are the go to. But I do have some shotguns with rifle slug barrels for just in case I do want to use them. Birds to Hooves to Paws - not many firearms can claim that much versatility.
