The KING Of All Lever Guns

Gawd - sinning goes along as it always has. Somebody has a lever gun out now that feeds from AR mags. Not that there's anything wrong with feeding from a mag... I think they were selling these in some oddball calibre 100 years ago - 405 Win? I can't remember. I foolishly talked myself out of the 1895 lever gun... and then later, foolishly talked myself INTO an 1876 Winchester repro chambered in .45-75 bottleneck. It has been a joy though. Brass for it is insanely rare and you can make it ... but it is a PITA. I have about 300 pieces of brass and I hoard them like a mizer.

Wonder what .405 amm is like?

I put a vernier tang sight on mine and had a ball with it. If I had it to do again though... I think I would have gone with the 1895...

  1. Between the 95 Winchester and the 99 Savage, carry them 50 yards, and you'll leave the Win at home. The 99 carries like it was built for the hunt. Plus you can scope a 99 easily. I think you have to gunsmith the 95.
The 99 in 308 will do aught six work, below 180 grains.
I think the 95 was best known for the aught six. Both nice, but 95 is way over priced.

    1. The Savage was going to be my first centre fire rifle.Id been eyeing it since I was 14. I turned 16, I’d saved up for it…and then I got a girlfriend and life became a lot costlier…

  2. .405 Win was a favorite lion cartridge of Teddy Roosevelt.

  3. right after we moved here, the local Sportsmans warehouse had a sale on Henry rifles. I saw a really nice case harden one for 699 or there about and 10% off even. but I needed to replace the damn hot water heater too. still wished I got a henry in 44 or 45 though. they where really sharp looking guns
    damn hot water heater !

    1. My old ex-boss bought one of their .22’s… and no kidding… that thing shoots like a house on fire. I think their new mag fed one does too… but they’re like minivans: i dont care how convenient, practical or accurate they are… they’re just not my style.

But I wear crocs so whadda I know?

  4. There's no law saying you can only own one lever gun. Hell, I got 5 or 6 myself and I'm eyeing another. Let's see, .22 long rifle, .22 magnum, .357 magnum, and two in 30-30 that I can remember right off. But that new Ruger/Marlin in .44 magnum is at my favorite store and it's a beaut. And of course all the Eye-talian replicas out there on the market too.

I think Browning used to have a lever gun that fed from a magazine, right smart looking piece, and Henry has the Long Ranger too. Both in blued metal and classic wood. Dang, I gotta start putting some effort into work and earn a bonus to keep up with my lever gun fetish.
