Orps and Australorps, for sure! Easygoing, good layers, and good meat birds if needed. If you handle them often when they're growing they'll jump into your lap if you sit down near them! They'll follow you around like small children! Also, they don't fight amongst themselves much. I have a mixed flock of Buff Orps, Lavender Orps, and Australorps.
I had some exotics when I was a kid and yeah…they can turn into beloved pets if you’re not careful.
I keep threatening my neighbours with backyard chickens and they all tell me to go for it. I dunno if I could bring myself to cut their heads off in the fall though… 😞
Meh... I have several "retirees" in my flock who don't lay anymore. I figure they've earned it, so I leave them alone. They're actually kinda rare. My hens usually go for about two years or so. Then they either get sick and die, or get eggbound and die.
