Orps and Australorps, for sure! Easygoing, good layers, and good meat birds if needed. If you handle them often when they're growing they'll jump into your lap if you sit down near them! They'll follow you around like small children! Also, they don't fight amongst themselves much. I have a mixed flock of Buff Orps, Lavender Orps, and Australorps.
I had some exotics when I was a kid and yeah…they can turn into beloved pets if you’re not careful.
I keep threatening my neighbours with backyard chickens and they all tell me to go for it. I dunno if I could bring myself to cut their heads off in the fall though… 😞
