My wife and I putt-putted around on this same machine back in the Dream Times. With us kids and a duffel of clothes it’d hit 60 MPH with a good tail wind. Ours was made in ‘82. It died for good when we got home from a ride up to Peace River and back. I shut her off…and she never started again. But - by Godfrey! She got us home. She ALWAYS got me home. How I miss her.
Today Big Red is powered by a big 1700cc longitudinally mounted V-Twin and he’ll do 75 MPH all day long with us two lard assed old geezers and all the compartments stuffed with luggage. We could never go back to the little 500 even if we wanted to because we’ve eaten too many pancakes over the years, we’d break the poor thing’s back if we sat on it! HAR HAR HAR!

The rest of the thread is over at the campfire via Eaton Rapids Joe. (Thanks, Joe. The pic just made my day). There’s other ghosts there… but like this one… they’re all friendly…
Ghosts indeed!
ReplyDeleteWhat’s the current ride?
iirc, Eric Peters st ericpetersuto.com (iirc) has one of these sweet little Hondas…

My current beast is a big touring bike - the Kawi 1700 Voyageur, J. I love it … but it may be my last bike. I’m debating on downsizing right now…
DeleteThanx Filthie.
DeleteMy last girlfriend was a Kawi 900 Classic. Small enough to drive anywhere in Houston, but big enough to ride to the Smokeys, up to niagara Falls, over to Detroit, back to Houston, up to Winnipeg, etc.
For 15 years she was loyal and faithful. Never complained or backtalked. She let me mount and ride her any time, as long, brief hard, soft, as I wanted. She was never jealous, and loved my care and attention- keeping her clean, oiled, lubricated, well mainted. All receipts in a notebook. I really looked after her and she repaid me well.
Thanks for the ghosts.
Juan
With a little imagination this is what your CX500 could become.

It looks like my Honda Rebel 250. Super fun for scooting around town, but I upgraded to a 750 Shadow for highway work.
ReplyDeleteOh I think your Reb probly looked better than that, BP! And the 250 was the king of the lot! They had bullet proof engines that ran great, looked great and fun to ride…! I might look at them again when I downsize…
DeleteI was always a Honda Nighthawk guy, loved those machines. The inline 4's were awesome. Down here in Texas it was all straight roads forever and if you're machine wouldn't do 80 you had no business on the highway.
ReplyDeleteI've got an '80 CX500 Custom in my garage, awaiting the Triple Bypass. It runs, but needs the fix. Looks showroom condition, though.
ReplyDeleteIt has to wait until I get the GS550 off the lift, though. That thing is a time machine--Vetter Windjammer fairing, bags, & trunk.....
