Today we are obsessed with imbuing our machines with intelligence, foolishly thinking that doing so will make us Gods that can create life and parodies of ourselves to entertain us, teach us and replace us. Our best and brightest forget that intellect without soul is like sex without love. If they ever do make such a machine, it will undoubtedly kill us and probably itself as well. Existence must have a point.
Back in better days when we were better men, our machines were pretty dumb but they were soulful works of art that even our Maker would approve of. The Steam Engine proves that we can focus and control mighty forces AND release it in constructive ways.
Paper. Slide rules, T squares, pencils. Hammers, drills, files, rivets, bolts, steel… once upon a time, long ago….
