The Mother Of All Kitchen Gadgets…

What is it? I can see a blender on there, looks like it might have a juicer, and I think that’s crank thing is a can opener…

Y’know I never really understood electric can openers. Mine are all manual crankers… I’ve never seen women have a problem with them. Electric can openers seem like a pointless extravagance that would only take up counter space…

But whadda I know?

  1. Cans were a lot heavier back in the 1940s and 1950s. An electric can opener made life easier for the chief cook and bottle washer. Add a little arthritis to your hands and the electric opener makes your life a lot easier.

    1. Yeah it had to be something like that WL. Y’know… I haven’t even seen an electric can opener in 100 years…

  2. Imagine my delight when, as a youngster, I discovered our electric can opener would trigger the shock collar on the neighbor's asshole German Shepard. Heh.

  4. We got an electric can opener years back, bolted up to the underside of the cabinets to save counter space. Was a giant POS. However the wife then threw away the old manual can opener just cause she thought we'd never need it again. You know, the old heavy style that survived WWI and WWII. When we shitcanned the electric, went to buy a new manual - guess what - they're all chinesium junk now. We've gone thru 5 or 6 in the past decade. The one in the drawer now is wobble and on its last legs. I'd pay good money to get the old one back, but no. Maybe I should scour eBay. Hell, the only reliable one I got now is the army surplus little thing on my keychain.

  5. Don, I use a Swing-a-Way. Very light pressure after an easy squeeze to puncture, nice gearing. I read they sold out & these are the only US-made can openers now. The EZ-DUZ-IT bought Swing-a-Way, so everything looks right:
