Being from Baja, Norte Mixico, (sarc for So. California), I've been eating it in salads FOREVER. It's also good stand alone with Lawry's or Cavender's seasoning salt, Italian, Ranch dressing. It's good with most Mexican foods and it's loaded with vitamins and "good" fats, not the bad ones. It's probably rather bland to newbies. We frequently eat them out of the half skin with just salt.
Wasted the avocado! ONE nice thing about San Diego was the avocado and citrus trees everywhere in the suburbs.
