In WW1 the first fighters took to the air in garish colours. The paint schemes would have made a modern interior decorator vomit: putrid oranges, lime greens, mustard yellows, blood red - the fighters wanted to be seen. The bright colours were an invitation for your enemies to come upstairs for a dogfight.
WW1 saw technology replace the warrior ethos. Machine guns and poison gas replaced bolt guns, bayonets and sabres. Tanks replaced cavalry. Camouflage and dirty pool replaced pageantry and chivalry.
I wonder if it is our weapons are dehumanizing us…?
