I lurk at a lot of the rural prepper sites. The disconnect from reality continues to amaze. They think survival in times of mass upheaval and the breakdown of law and order is as simple as moving out to the country and planting a garden. Historically though, the reality is that when the cities collapse and starve - people flee to the countryside and EVERYONE starves. Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, China - gah. In those regimes, the govt showed up on your doorstep, confiscated your crop and told you what you were going to plant next year - provided you didn't starve to death first.
The only wildcard that might upset that paradigm is that American citizens are armed and if they decide to... oh boy. It'll be a 360 degree Ukranian firing squad ... and maybe everyone gets shot instead of starving to death...? HAR HAR HAR!!!
Whadda I know?
Apparently this hoard is from the Tudor era. Some bloke decided to start stackin metal and for some reason... was never able to come back and retrieve the stash. Where did he get this wealth from? It is almost inconceivable that he earned it fair and square above board and legitimately... but who knows? What happened to him? Was he dispensed with during an obscure power struggle? Did some angry peasant cut his throat? We will never know.
Not to shit on the preppers because... what else are you going to do? I guess all I am saying is that you can hedge your bets anyway ya want, but if Murphy and Darwin have other plans... your number is up, and you leave this world with what you came in with!

Filthie, I have gotten into this argument many times with people on prepper sites.
ReplyDeletePrepping is a great idea but you prep based on the scenario.
Economic crash, then having silver and gold would be a good thing. Natural disaster, then having food, batteries, fuel, etc is good.
End of the World like a nuclear war or EMP ?
If you live East of the Rockies or within a few hundred miles of a city you will not survive no matter how well armed you are. When thousands of starving desperate city dwellers all head to "the country" and everyone thinks they'll shoot the same deer, it's "game over man.. game over". In that situation have a high caliber pistol round for you, your pets and family.
Preppers go crazy when I say this but it's true.
Now if you live in the boonies in the Rocky Mountains far from population centers then that's a different scenario and you have a good chance of surviving.
They won't bother with deer as cows are far easier to hunt.
DeleteLeave this world with what you came into it with. So true. At the end of the game, the King and the Pawn got into the same box. Maybe I’m just feeling a little melancholy. We have to LIVE while we are alive. When I walked the Camino last year, there is a cemetery with a poignant memorial outside the gates, that said in essence “Not long ago I was where you are. Soon you will be where I am”. Puts a shudder down my spine every time I remember that. We struggle and bicker with each over so many horrible things - most of which never happen to paraphrase Twain. What’s important to each of YOU? What do you want deep inside? Time to get off my fat arse and stop drinking coffee.
ReplyDeleteI suspect an turkey shoot when the gibme's hit the wall! I see fuckwits of all stripes walking around in an daze with their 8 dolla coffees hunched over staring into the blue light emitters, expecting to see the new day as the one that went before.
ReplyDeleteMy advice... Get right with God!
