Pretty Much…

  1. Six years ago my son attended his first year of plumbing at community college. He did well, Dean's List. The drawback was that in order to proceed to the second year of training he had to get hours in--nobody would hire him. Being in the military, I don't have friends in the trades or construction in the city we live in. While I was in Iraq, I told him to visit work sites where they were building houses and offer his services for free just as long as a licensed plumber would sign off on his hours. They all said no citing Workmen's Compensation issues, etc. My son is smart, has a good work ethic he got from being in the Army Reserves and working from the age of 15 at a garage. I just heard on the radio last week that ALL plumbing companies in my city are desperate for people to come into the trade...I guess those six years have really destroyed a lot of those older GenX'rs knees and backs--sucks to be them. They couldn't share the wealth and wanted all the money for themselves instead of taking on an apprentice or two...now they've got to deal with Turd World "apprentices" who show up or leave the worksite whenever it suits them, may or may not speak English fluently, steal their tools and equipment just before they disappear and just used their "employment" to get a pay stub to show a prospective landlord to get a domicile or to the province to get EI benefits.

    1. I used to hear it all the time: ya get out what ya put in. It’s not necessarily true.
