How Do You Carry?

If I recall the teachings of St. Cooper correctly - he was a firm advocate of carrying with your weapon (a Colt 1911 of course) in “Condition 1” if circumstances warranted it - which I *think* meant - cocked and locked. It was totally safe IF your gun handling skills were honed to the point of instinct and you were of the proper “mindset”. That was a long time ago. I don’t think Glock or Sig are even putting thumb safeties on their guns anymore. They’re all going to those idiot proofed funky triggers you see on guns made by Bostitch or Fisher Price!

Sigh. I’m gonna get egged.

But… my problem is… I’m dogged by Darwin and Murphy. Stupid shit happens to me. In my former life, I was often in very close proximity to self destructive stupid people. Nowadays Not nearly so much thank God. But even so… a cocked and locked pistol on my hip would make me extremely nervous. The USP’s fire controls operate exactly like the 1911s. You can pull that thing lightening fast, and as the gun comes up all it is - is an elegant sweep of the thumb across the safety, finger on the trigger - and she’s ready to rock n roll the millisecond your sight picture aligns. Properly trained squaddies and law men can do it faster than you can even think about it.

But improperly trained men… can find themselves in Darwinian situations like this. I have no idea what kinda holster that is… but it’s definitely the wrong one for that fella. I dunno if I’d carry with one up the spout or not…? Not trying to tell YOU how to carry… but for me… GAH. I don’t shoot or train often enough anymore, my proficiency and readiness are probly in the toilet… and I’m getting old and slow.

Nowadays, if I had to… I’d probly carry my little Redhawk in 45 Long Colt. If yer thinking meat is in Condition 5… ya probly don’t want ya gat in Condition One.

Your mileage may vary - and I sincerely hope you’re getting better mileage than I am these days!

Have a great Friday - and thanks for stopping by. Stay warm.

  1. Looks like Mexicans so forget about safety with those danger clowns

  2. I have several auto squirters. I prefer a manually operated safety. If your brain can't deal with it, go sit your happy ass back on the porch. The idea of an issue like this is kid stuff.

  3. I carry a 1911A1 in Condition 1, cocked and locked, and a spare magazine in a SmartCarry holster.
The dude in the picture needs to carry in Condition Fife, weapon unloaded and one bullet in a shirt pocket.

    1. Yup. His mind is totally on his paperwork and not at all on the gat! I find myself having to slow down and think about gun safety now before the old habits kick in. I need more range time…

  4. I’m a big believer in the 1911 carried cocked and locked. Both safeties have to be disengaged to function. When my wife looked at the son’s SIG she asked where the safety was. I told her it was between your ears ( that also applies to the 1911 as the third safety)

  5. Jeezus. I remember one forum discussion where people were against the shoulder holsters that carry the gun in a horizontal position, the thinking was that you were inadvertently flashing people behind you with the muzzle constantly. That guy there is flashing the muzzle at everyone in front of him constantly. Idiota.

And Dammit, Filthie, you got a Redhawk in 45 long colt? I've been looking for one myself for several years. Ain't seen one yet. Be nice to have a double action .45 LC to go along with all my single actions. Guess I'll keep looking.

  6. I’ve owned several 1911s as well as a pair of replica Colt SAAs. They’re charming antiques. Glock and Sig in .45acp are how guns are made today. If you can’t adjust to change, go sit your happy ass back on the porch. I was taught that ALL safeties on guns are merely decorative and should NEVER be trusted but YMMV.

  8. Maybe he has it pointed that way with a swivel holster so he can grab the grip, swivel down 45 deg and pull the trigger?
