The New Australian Fighting Knife, Apparently…

$550.00 Aussie, currently out of stock…

🤨

Nope. Not seeing it, myself. Converted, that’s $503.00 Canukie,  $359.20 in USD.   Ughhhh… they can keep it! That looks like something some bucket headed clipper from the triads might carry! I think if all you’re going to do is fight with a blade… the Kippers are still king of the castle with their tried and true Fairbairn Sykes commando blade.

Fine for fighting maybe…? But not much else…

I dunno what the Yanks are using these days. This thing, maybe…?

I dunno what to think of that. I’m not a knife fighter or a squaddie and to me… that thing looks a little…cluttered?  I really want to like it but for me as an outdoor stubfart… it’s a little overkill, maybe? I’d think their original Kabar knives are the best of the breed. Simple, robust, perfect for giving the local warlord a tracheotomy or doing any number of campcraft and bushcraft chores.

I spent a small fortune on knives over the years, and even made a few of my own… but I gave most of them away, and a couple grew legs and wandered off while I wasn’t watching. Today I only have three left. A Leatherman multi tool, a small Kershaw folder and a cheapo Mora knife.

The truth is… I can do anything I need to do with any one of them even when out camping or hunting.  An appreciative customer gave me the Leatherman 20 years ago so I dunno how much it cost or even if they make that style anymore. The Kershaw was $70.00 bucks about 15 years ago, and my Mora was about $30.00 and I love it in spite of myself.

Even so… I sure would like one of those classic Kabars all the same.

  1. In a former life I went through several of the old leather handled K bars Very handy size which lead them to be used as general tools. The weak link was the narrow tang at the guard once bent and straightened it was just a matter of time to failure. I carry alloy folders and keep pry bars handy now

  2. If you're reduced to fighting with a knife, you've already made several mistakes and probably ain't gonna make it anyway. More guns, more bullets is the answer. But for a fighting knife, I'd put my money on the K-Bar. The old one. That or a bayonet. Pretty much any bayonet. Extra hard steel, won't snap or break.

But mostly knives are tools. I got an Opinel #8 for daily carry, carbon steel blade and shaving sharp. Got a Mora in the truck, backup for fish cleaning duty if I'm ever lucky enough to catch anything. Got a large box full of old old folding knives, Buck, Henry, Old Timer, Queen Steel, etc. Sometimes I alternate the Opinel for some heritage. Camp chores are better handled with a small hand axe in my opinion, but what do I know, I camp in a 24 ft travel trailer.

That top pick looks like some gas station chinesium junk that sales for $39.99. Can't believe what they are actually asking for, total rip. Get an army surplus bayonet and be happy.

    1. I seen a lot of guys that carry Opunel, Don. They are reasonably priced too, aren’t they?

    2. I lost my first one, then came across a deal on Amazon where they were like $15 a pop for a bulk order, so I bought 10. I'm good for the rest of my life there. Plus I have a few to give away too. Converted my brother, he carries one daily too.

  3. Knives are like screwdrivers; different ones for different jobs. I'm not a knife nerd. I carry a Leatherman Surge on my belt at work. It cost me about $100.00 US about fifteen years back. I like it. All the "blades" are replaceable, though I've only broken the file.
In all honesty, I should have that thing on my belt even on the weekends. I don't know how many times between Saturday morning and Sunday evening I reach for that thing only to find a belt loop! A Buck hunting knife, decent fillet knife, several old military issue Camillus electricians knives in drawers and on hooks in the garage, and the machete I have hanging in the barn complete the suite for me. There is this one weird knife on the floorboard of the car that looks like the offspring of a machete and that "cluttered" knife shown above. That one's reserved for potential carjackers. The last thing the next froggy carjacker trying me out will ever say will be "What the HELL is THAT???"

    1. Yup I always used to wear my Leatherman too. And a little mag lite for early morning Dawg Patrol. Now Maglites are
passé though… ya gotta spend at least $200.00 for a wonder light that will roast your eyeballs with 15 billion lumens…

  4. Our YouBoob feeds really are linked Glen. I had that same "Zu" knife thing pop up in my feed last night and I'm not signed in. I'm just an Aussie civilian and a mad-keen hunter. I've never heard of that brand. Not a soldier, no idea. In my opinion, it looks like a piece of carp, and the scabbard looked 3D printed to me. I bought a genuine Ka-Bar 30 years ago (holy smokes time flies), when I lived in Darwin, in the Northern Territory. I'm a mad keen fisherman, and because we are not allowed to carry a pistol for self-defense, I wore my Ka-Bar when fishing in case a croc, a pig or a "Long-Grasser" decided to have a go - at least I'd have some sort of chance at defending myself. I also have a Kershaw "Amphibian" that I wear when scuba diving or spear fishing. My fishing and hunting knives are Victorinox flexible filleter & a Victorinox boning knife. I also have two of the original Leatherman Supertools (one was a gift).

    1. I dunno about Australia. I watched a vid where this kid and his wife were after crabs - great, big mean bastards with pinchers that could snap your arms off! He gets behind them, grabs them by the arms so they can’t lop his - and then it’s all over and they have the ugly brute in a pot and the party’s on! And the bugs you guys got!!! Some a those things are so ugly and nasty. I’d scream like a little bitch if I ever came across one a those! HAR HAR HAR!!!

  5. The cluttered Marine knife also comes with its original name, forget the model no. It's VERY useful. in combo with its sheath, it's a heavy duty wire, nail, ?, cutter. The top is for wood cutting, mostly for booby trap notches.
I have 2 old, xlnt condition K Bars. Well, one was made by Camillus. One I bought off a recon ex Marine, for the hefty price of $50 about 20 years ago. The other was given to me by my father in law, may he rest in peace.

  7. Saw the Kabar 1266 tanto the other day. Man, what lines it has. Me likey. But I have no where near the skills needed to survive a knife fight. Be total desperation self defense only for me.
