Stubfart Ramble: Another Home Made Rifle Sling

Errrr… sorry about the background. FFS…I was supposed to
be doing a Level 3 bathroom scrub…
and then I spy my rifle beside the toilet and start playing with it!

And then, next thing I know… I’m down in the Reclusium fiddling with my packs,
reloading, fussing over my hunting gear… and forget about the damn chores!
I will finish cleaning the crapper today - I SWEAR it!!!
🤬

I made a minimalist cheapo sling for the Tupperware Rifle awhile back but decided I wanted to upgrade. The guys on OyTube are making their own slings and the designs range from slick and well thought out to the utterly retarded. This one is somewhere in the middle.

The problem with this is the guys making high end factory slings have access to proprietary materials and fittings that bums like me can’t get. I have a Magpul quick-adjust sling and the strapping is thicker, slicker and more pliable than the nylon webbing I can get off Amazon. Is it worth the extra 40.00 ~ $60.00 you’ll pay…? I dunno. I suppose? If I were a squaddie doing patrols in nasty neighborhoods filled with shitty people, I probably wouldn’t bugger around with a project like this. If my life was riding on my equipment you can bet I’d shell out for a top notch operator’s sling and think nothing of it.

But I am an old stubfart with time on his hands. I wanted a wide strap, 1.5” sling that I could zip in and out fast. I DIDN’T want flapping “tails” of loose webbing so I used an ingenious hack to secure it. The only blemish on the effort is the hockey tape I used to secure some excess webbing that I don’t want to cut just yet. I’m going to play with the design and may need it for the last fine adjustments. It’ll look better when I clean it up.

It’s a tad slower than my Magpul sling is, but that’s okay. I won’t be jumping out of helicopters to pot talibangers or any other muzzle monkeys. It’s not as good as the trusty old 1907 leather slings with their shooting loops and precise adjustments. But that’s okay wide strap will make the carry a little more comfortable, and once I mark the adjustments for a good “hasty sling” hold… it should do the trick.
