100 light years ago. I was 17. Saturday afternoon.
Pop and I’d finished up early, getting the last of the bales in off the first summer cut. It was hot, miserable work. When dad called a halt early for the day I was gone like a pistol shot. Ya didn’t wanna be caught out in the open goofing off on the farm or one of the parents would see it and put ya to work! I jumped in the farm truck and went into town.
It was a scorching hot, hazy idyllic afternoon… and everyone was gone. NONE of my friends were around. My girlfriend was gone. It was like I was the only person in the world, all by myself. I decided to go to the bar and get a beer. I’d never been in a bar before.
I was the only one in there. On the big screen TV something called MTV was on, playing something called a “music video”. I remember drinking the cold beer and watching it without any real impressions either way. MTV, eh? Music videeyahs…?
Hmpfffff…..! Whatever…
I think a beer cost a buck and a quarter back then…? I shudder to think of what it costs today. I drank my beer, and then went out to the the pinball arcade. I think it was my first time in the bar and I remember being unimpressed with it.
A lifetime later I changed my mind on this toon, when I saw history’s two biggest shitbirds combining their talents to sing it.
That bar is long gone. The farm is gone. Dad is gone…who knows where my school friends ended up. We all scattered on the winds. As did my family. I read somewhere that MTV was on the financial ropes and will be lucky to survive. They’ll be gone too if they’re not careful.
But, by the grace of God… I am still here. And just like on that hot, sweaty summer day 100 light years ago… I am still here, wondering where everyone went…
