Scout Packs

100 years ago I was looking for a day pack for hunting. I wanted enough room for a big water bottle, some sammiches and knives, ammo, fire starting and misc. crap… and that’s it! I wanted something light and most importantly - comfortable. I didn’t have access to or knowledge of military surplus options and ended up with an expensive boutique asspack - Fjallraven or some damned thing…  and it works great (it damned well should for the price I paid for it) - but the price tag stung a bit and it was a complete misery breaking the damned thing in!

I like the Corporal’s solution. He goes through assembling the same thing for half the price with surplus parts off Amazon and flea bay. It’s a flexible set up and you can adjust the components to suit your particular wants and needs.

It’s perfect. Ya got enough stuff for an easy day afield and maybe the bare bones necessary to get you through an unexpected night outside too. This’d be a great project to share with the kids if they want something like this. Poosted for general interest - I wish I’d seen something like this 20 years ago when I was in the market for it. You don’t have to spend stupid money to get good gear like this.

Hunting season’s coming up fast, boys. I think I’ll be taking to the field this year too! Maybe we’ll see ya out there!

Cheers,

Filthie

    1. I have to go with the 243. I’ll be hunting in farm country and a 200 yard shot is entirely possible.

  2. Great set up, looks similar to the 80s web gear we stitched together from the shit issued and stuff acquired from crown asset sales. Ultimately, your bugout ruck should blend in with all the other schlubbs roaming the realm when the grand illusion ends. Looking like an 'operator' doesn't favor opsec, your battlerattle should be ready to go at the final destination.

    1. I have most of that, need belt extender, would like a harness with more padding. I also have Camelback water backpack. But I am so old Glen, it's all I can do to animate my carcass over the land nearly naked! Looking at Shield Plus .30 super carry great deals on those.

  3. When I was in my early 30's, found the perfect 'pack' (actually sling bag) that just fit my needs. It stayed out of the way when stalking and had just enough space to carry my hunting kit. Then the bag developed a tear along the zipper edge (due to me pulling it out from rear truck seat) and that was that. I tried to replace it but could not find its equivalent. My stupid - I should have listened to my Uncle, who told me when you find something perfect for your needs - Buy Two ! My present 'decoy bag' works, but with more bulk that somehow wants to slide off my shoulder. PITA really - I miss that old sling bag !

  4. Based on what you're saying, you'd probably be suited for something along the lines of '64 or '82 pattern webbing that the CAF issued, once upon a time - as per McGoober's post up above. Drawback is, that stuff is largely unobtanium as of late. Lot of guys were grabbing it up, even during the GWOT era when I was in, because the issued gear was absolute garbage. If you DO get lucky and find some of that stuff, snap it up and clutch it with a kung-fu grip.
