Careful There, Tim…

If he’s not careful - he’ll end up running around in Depends diapers and Crocs like I did! I love the old BPCR guns - and the Sharps is the best of the breed! These guns are perfect for the old stubfart with time on his hands.

If you’re looking for that one special Retirement Rifle…
it doesn’t get any better than this.

About the only criticism I have on this vid is ammo sourcing. The cost of factory vintage trap door ammo is insane. I saw prices of $80.00 ~ $100.00 for a box of 20. For $250.00 you can get a bullet mould, dies and brass to keep you shooting for a long, long time. I use Dacron fillers in my 45-70 Remington roller and my bullets drop from the mould at .459 diameter. I buy my lead from Poli and he scavenges wheel weights for his ingots. It’s time consuming but…it gives senior delinquents like me off the street and out of jail.

I hope he finally does take that buffalo the way he’s talking about.

  1. I spent all of 5 minutes looking and found 45-70, box of 20, 405 grain LRN, for $45. That's $2 plus per trigger pull, but then I also found the same 405 grain lead bullets for reloading at $73 per box of 200, so with re-using the brass and adding cost of primers and powder, you can get that down to maybe $1 per trigger pull.

I'd love to have one myself, but I got three of four other make-a-wish items on my list ahead of that. But maybe I'll go ahead and buy some extra dies for my setup just in case.

    1. Are they standard 45-70s or reduced pressure loads, Don? Last time I looked the reduced loads (safe for vintage firearms) were approaching $100.00 a box. The conventional higher pressure stuff might be cheaper? And lord have mercy on you if you have any of the even cooler vintage guns in .45-90 or 50-90…

    2. I would argue that that they are ALL reduced power loads unless specially marked. That's what they do for pistol ammo like .45 Colt - reduced power in case someone loads up grand-daddy's old pistol. You'd have to get Buffalo Bore or equivalent to get the full powered .45 rounds.

So I would assume the lead flat-nose bullet loads are low-powered, but maybe double check. Also, if you roll your own, make them any power you want.

And that's a very high dollar custom rifle, a replica, if it can't handle modern ammo I'd ask for my money back.

  2. Check out Steinel ammo for black powder classic Trapdoor ammo. It's what I got to load my Springfield and yes, I also -did- get the molds and reloading 'stuff' for it as well as in the long run a 500gn 45-70 is a Hell of a round and me likey!!!
