Based on a duel that took place in 1892 between two high born ladies who disagreed over a flower display. Princess Pauline Metternich, granddaughter of Napoleonic-era Austrian statesman Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich, and Countess Anastasia Kilmannsegg, wife of the Statthalter of Lower Austria. Dueling was illegal in Austria, so the pair and their entourage traveled to Lichtenstein to settle their argument.
It was a duel to first blood, and Princess Pauline was declared the winner. Modern history aficionados have yet to find any hard evidence that the duel actually took place, but I believe it did. A few of the ladies I've been involved with would have cheerfully shown up at dawn, sharpened their rapier, and done their very best to cut their opponent to ribbons.
That’s the story I got too. I wonder when duelling died out? I think it was still a big deal in Europe into the 1920’s…? I think it’s a tradition that needs to come back…
