There’s Probably More Truth To This…

…than a lot of folks would want to admit…

I remember reading Kim Du Toit 100 years ago and I forget the exact verbiage, but his SHTF survival strategy was much like this. His guns would let him loot whatever he needed, and if he had to kill a few people to get it - that was just fine because the Law Of The Jungle is all that applies in a SHTF event.  The only problem with that is that to restore order… often guys like that are going to have to be killed in large numbers by any means necessary, and without remorse.

The older I get the more conflicted I become. To survive as a predator?

Ughhh.  I wonder if it’s not better to die honourably?

  1. That's why after the Reconquista, Spain sent all those soldiers who had been battling against the Muslims for years and who didn't have an enemy to fight anymore--all over the world to conquer and colonize a whole bunch of countries from Asia to the Americas.

  2. I was out in Pierre, South Dakota just hanging out at the gun shop with the Poor But Honest Gun Trader of South Dakota and a few other cowboys and honest men. Conversation turned to the break down of civilization and stockpiling supplies, and old Cody said, "Hell, just take a rifle up to the old Smith ranch and you can get all you want." Everyone laughed, and Cody added, "Welcome to South Dakota Jack."
A few minutes later someone asked me if I'd stocked up on much. When I said I hadn't, Cody told me to come on out to South Dakota, "Smith ain't the only place out here, Jack." Which produced more laughter.

Everyone in South Dakota is armed and dangerous one way or another. About the time the corpulent Kim du Toit started running around with his AR-15, complete with 20 pounds of Tennessee go-fasters on it, someone would sure as hell shoot him, loot the body, then throw him in the neighbor's hog pen. Hogs aren't all that particular about what they'll eat.

One story that I know has some truth to it concerns a group of friends that used to shoot long range rifles together. They had some expensive gear, and liked to get out early so as to beat the rush. Wellsir, one fine morning they got all set up, shot a round or two, then went down to change out their targets. While they were all down range, some guys in a pickup truck pulled up, loaded all their gear up into the truck, and took off. So what were they going to do? They were several hundred yards away and unarmed.

The whole SHTF preparedness scenario usually neglects one or two crucial points. One, it isn't going to last all that long, but while it's going on you'll have to protect yourself from the government as well as from the criminals. Two, no one has the kind of medical knowledge that is needed to deal with likely injuries and illness. Field stripping my 1911 blindfolded isn't going to help me with a badly sprained ankle. Three, maybe most importantly, seek out a group of people who believe or have the same moral values that you do. Church, for instance. The gun club sounds good but probably isn't, as they think they're looking for someone to shoot. A garden club is a much better bet.

Du Toit claims to be from Africa, and published pictures of his old homestead some years back. If any of that was true, he came from a very well-to-do family. If, like I say, it was true.

  3. chances are it will be handled by some old guys with grandkids
and are tired of assholes like that.
or as my Grandfather said many years ago, some assholes just need killing as there is no way to change their minds.

    1. THIS is the way!^^^
When the shit hits, I'll last to the bitter, not so glorious end!!! IF I can avoid firefights, ambushes, disease, backstabbing, and starvation. Otherwise the bitter end will be, whenever...
      I've got a cheap, 1st gen, Ruger American, in 308 and a 6.5 Swedish Mauser from 1942.
What more could one ask for?

  4. Filthy not to get religious but being a Christian isn't about going to a church or mouthing words. It's about living your life the way Jesus taught us every day not just when it is easy to do so.

There are so many supposed Christians who in Church are "brother, sister, Jesus" then after Church go home and cheat on their wives, lie, cheat and steal to make money and then next Sunday are back to Church.

These are the EXACT people that Jesus is talking about in Matthew 7:23 "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

These things go even more so during a time of crisis.
You are going to be a scumbag and murder your neighbor because he prepared and you didn't ? You are going to shoot in the head a starving mother and her kids but then go "praise Jesus" ?

In a SHTF situation times will be tough and as you said the best thing would be to have a group of people who have the same values get together and look out for each other.

In a SHTF situation with my health problems, I can stretch my medicine for 6 months maximum and then I'm dead.
My goal is to make sure that the younger members of my family are OK and then I'm checking out.
I'm not going to face Jesus when I die and say "yeah Lord in good times I followed you and your teachings but when things got tough, I threw that out the window and was an evil scumbag".

    1. Agreed. In a SHTF the plan shouldn’t be to do unto others and steal their stuff… the priority should be to get the damned lights back on… but whadda I know?

  5. Need to think in reverse - I'm not going to go shoot somebody to loot his supplies, but there's lots of other people willing to shoot me and steal my supplies. Will I fire in self-defense? Damn straight. And that's good with Jesus too, as far as I know. (I think we'll all be a little surprised at judgment day, but that's just me thinking too much).

As for the video, I think the two assholes in Florida with the FBI shootout back in 1986 got some "free" guns by going to some popular shooting spots and stealing them from people out target practicing. I go to a closed club but also keep an eye out for shenanigans.

  6. Jesus was no pacifist, SO MANY Christians get that dead wrong.
As we know, that violent, pushy incident with the money changers in the temple, certainly went on his Permanent record now, didn't it!
