Hidden Places

Earlier today we were out at the county equestrian field out in the country a couple miles out. It was a favourite haunt for Mort n’ Macey for years. Unless there’s an event… nobody ever goes there and we had the place to ourselves. I took my last walk with Mort out here a couple years back. The dogs ran off leash because there wasn’t any trouble they could get into. The grass is cut and the grounds are clean and groomed and all I had to do was pick up the land mines left by the mutts. It’s not an exciting place unless you’re a dog or a horse - then it’s heaven I suppose.

In any event, we were doing the standard dawg recon and the Niglet found a little cut line into the trees that led to a trail further in. It was beautifully cut and maintained… in the middle of nowhere! I’d never noticed it before.

The Niglet loved it. I wished I had found it when Mort and Macey were younger and spryer. It let out at a public school yard after meandering through the bush for about 3/4 of a mile. The wife found a cheap kids’ frisbee in the playground that had gotten left behind and I discovered I had somehow forgotten how to throw one - and though the wife could throw… she couldn’t catch one to save her life. After some clumsy failures and a lot of laughter it all started to come back. Hannah though… is definitely not a frisbee dawg. She thought we were nuts. It’s been forever since we threw the ol’ frisbee. After it came back I felt years younger. Think the wife did too, maybe…? When’s the last time you threw a football or a frisbee?  We used to do it all the time as kids and even as adults, talking and laughing over beers and the BBQs.

There’s a lot of good memories in this place for me… and today we made some new ones too. I might just need to grab a frisbee if I see one on sale somewhere and throw it in with the camping stuff.

    1. My stump farm* woods don't seem very exciting either, BUT, there's deer, turkey, lynx and bobcat (the neighbor caught a wolf and a bear on his trail cams in the last year), skunk, possum, armadillo, snakes (including rattlers, copperheads, cottonmouth), lizards, box and pond turtles, tons of types and numbers of birds AND something that looked like a weasel on steroids. The weasel thing was crossing the driveway, a hundred plus yards from the front deck, whatever it is, shouldn't be here.
*Stump farm. Mature old, hardwoods, clear cut back in '95. Now, "woods"...with critters.
      A wonderland for dogs.

    1. She sure is, A. We had a wrestling match and that little shit just blows me away with all her strength and energy… it makes me want two dawgs. When I beat up one, the other treacherous hoople head will often jump in to help and the dogs end up taking the lumps rather than me! šŸ˜‚šŸ‘
