Y’know… it’s really tough for some fathers n’ sons or daughters to bond these days. Time is so short as it is. The gulf between generations grows every day. As we age we slowly lose our marbles and it isn’t the kids moving away from us anymore… it’s us moving away from them. If you’re not careful, one day ya wake up dead… and it’s months or even years go by before the kids realize you’re gone and they really start to miss you. It’s important to get in front of all that.
I’ve bloviated in the past about how young fathers can bond with young sons with RC planes and drones. A ten year old can do it if Dad takes the time to show him first. But bigger older middle aged men need to bond with their stubfart fathers and toys like RC planes and vehicles might cut it… or they might not.
I wish I coulda gone back in time before life came between us, and maybe started a project like this with my dads.
and offer stitch and glue kits.
There are others.
Sigh.
The memories you could make and the legacies you could leave, eh? Beers, BS, wood shavings, arguments and rebuttals that you could share and hammer out… right in your own garage, with Pop…
GAH. It’s too late for me, my Dads are long gone, over The Great Divide. Time, space, and family set my father in law and I hard against each other, but at one time we might have mightily enjoyed sharing such a project. Could a stronger bond between us have prevented our differences getting the better of us…? I wonder sometimes. My own Dad would might have seriously considered such an enterprise light years ago.
Father’s Day is coming up, fellas. You may think Dad will always be there, that you have all the time in the world - only to close your eyes and open them to see that years have flown in the blink of an eye. Or maybe you’re the weak link - you could drop dead, or fall down the stairs and be gone too.
Maybe there’s other projects for you guys to pour your heart and soul into so that you all have something to hang onto in case Darwin or Murphy have one of you checking out unexpectedly. Maybe it’s a potting shed or a henhouse or… Whatever… jump on this guys. Don’t let it wait.
Time is not your friend.
This got me an bit Misty in my covfefe this morning! My Da taught me things I didn't realize until it was too late to thank him.
