There’s a lot of classical authors out there that a hick like me has never read. For some reason Oscar Wilde came up and I’d heard some place he was a pervert. So when I got home I went on the computer and asked the question:

Oscar? Oscar Wilde was a pervert, as were a host of his contemporaries. Putting things into perspective, Wilde was a harmless pervert, confining his perverted activities to adults and staying in the closet.

I seem to recall the thing that got Wilde jailed for buggery (under terrible conditions that led to his eventual death) was Wilde publicly boasting about buggering some powerful noble’s son. (The son may have been an adult at the time, I don’t remember, but Wilde was not at all closeted.)
This is what hubris gets you. The amount of buggery in the Brit upper classes was likely staggering, but, as you point out, one didn’t go around boasting about it. Not a good move, Oscar.

DeleteI've heard it said that pretty much every famous "confirmed bachelor" was actually a faggot in disguise, especially when referencing English and Euro artsy types, like authors, poets, actors, etc. But since they made quite a bit of "art" that the universities like to teach, they have to white wash the buggery and make it acceptable.
