Fortunes Flutter In The Breeze…

Lookit that beaut! A mechanical marvel!!! Sure wish I had one! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

But that’s the way it goes, eh? I guess one of the big Swiss watch makers invented the piezo quartz watch movement, thought nothing of it…and sold the patent to some unknown piker watch company called Timex.

Oops.

I’m still waiting someone to get off their ass and jump on my favourite unrealized opportunity - the Rotory Dial Stupid Phone!

Crimes - the thing has a two bit dipole antenna! No apps, no tracking, no spying, no ads… and if ya want secure communication…

The world is full of unrealized opportunities.

  1. Interestingly, Kodak stayed with that paper plan well into the digital era. Their COO, who came from Lucent ran them into the dirt. Not content with ruining one iconic business, she returned to Lucent as CEO to fly that company into the ground as well.

How thick were those Kodak execs? They had to see everyone and their mother waddling around with digital cameras.

The number of companies that created cutting edge tech that would literally print money, only to shelve it is legion.

  2. My dad, a human factors engineer by training and profession, taught at the Moore College of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as at Bell Laboratories before the Lucent disasters, also in his field of expertise. They were special institutions, with top flight people in their respective student body and employ. It was a mark of distinction for him that he was valued as an instructor by them.

    1. I had a year or so there where it was very cool. I was new, so they had me going to training classes. You could sign up for a class in say, a protocol, taught by one of the guys on the team that invented it. Best classes ever. These old timers could not only tell you about how it worked, but why they put in this or that feature, or even byte.

One of my colleagues went to a unix class taught by one of the dudes that invented it.

      Can't do that any more.

  3. I've had that dial cell phone on order for a few years now, but they have never shipped it.
