Sunday 9mm Humbuggery

Jeff Cooper said that if ya gotta do 9mm the CZ75 was the best of the lot. I personally love the CZ but… yeah. 9mm… no….

But…ay carumba…there’s some horrible liberties
being taken with the classic little 9.
Ewwwww!

Back in the 80s the Marines betrayed their fanboys when they obsoleted the .45 and went to the Beretta 9mm. I seriously debated my stance on the M9. If it was good enough for the squaddies it was surely good enough for me. But gawd… it was an ugly pistol, wasn’t particularly well built (although that was later rectified in later specimens) … but it was ugly as all sin and had all the allure of a brick.

But lately I see they’re going to work on the old M9. And some of the specimens look far more enticing than the original beaters the military got all those years ago.

I’ve seen a couple of these now. Dunno who makes this one… but I’ve seen a few from Wilson Combat and Nighthawk that got the royal treatment. If I were still in the market I might take an interest in them.

I wonder… how can ya hit a homer with the M9… and totally miss the boat with the CZ…?

  2. Not that I ever owned one, but there was quite the humbuggery about pistols that were double action first shot and single action for each succeeding shot. It took some training to double-tap effectively with such devices. The Beretta got it's claim to fame with the Lethal Weapons movie, so there's that.

With today's technology, one can have double action always, true single action ala 1911 style, mushy Glock style striker fire, etc. and so forth. There's nothing inherently wrong with 9 mm, especially with the better defensive ammo now available. I'd hate to get shot with one. Plus the added capacity of the .45 big bores is a bonus.

As a practical matter, I'd recommend some mid-range plastic fantastic striker pistol such as S&W M&P or the Glock. It's a generic tool that works, is easily replaceable, and does its job with minimal fuss. Both the pistols you have above have the range-toy / safe queen look.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Colt SAA replicas and I have more than a few 1911 style pistols. Love them all but daily carry alternates between a Smith snubby .38 or a Smith Shield in 9 mm.

  3. The original CZ 75 and the Bs are pretty damn good pistols.

  4. I have a few friends that have Wilson Combat 45s and they are NICE. The problem is that they are too nice and too expensive to target shoot all of the time so they are mostly "safe queens" and my buddy target shoots his vanilla Colt 45 most of the time.

  5. Recommend that the proof is in the shooting. Ya'd have to try them both. For meself, it's the CZ by a mile.

  6. Back in the 80's, I got an original Beretta 92, with heel mag release. VERY nice pistol, most accurate handgun I've ever had. It is a BIG gun. Traded it like 10,000 other awesome fire sticks i've traded off, like a tard.
CZ75 is very nice, but I'll always be stuck on a mildly tuned (because they need it) Browning Hi Power, or quality clone. I'd go go for a Glock 21 in 45acp for a high capacity 45, with a Commander length, double stack 1911 as a very close second.
I'd carry any of those if, IF I were to stop carrying my 1990 vintage G19, which has proven itself bet-yer-life reliable. Why haven't I traded it off? Maybe because it edges out the Colt Commander for EDC.
