Hrmmmm. Even for 77grainers… that seems a little steep to me…
Mind you that’s a red dot Eotech or something very similar.
I do it right. I shoot a scope. Rather than trust a chit house graphic some dude
Pulled out of his arse… I’d go to the range, zero for 100, 200, and 300m…and remember
the scope settings or ‘come-ups’.
Do your homework.
It8s just my opinion but I don’t think the 223 is worth squat beyond 200m
on anything other than gophers.
YMMV
That's got to be for a .300 Blackout or similar. For standard .223 55-62 grain, you hold a bit low for 100 meters, right on for 200, just a touch high for 300. Assuming a standard 250 meter zero, of course.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be something like that McC. I don’t think even one of those chopped 7.5” AR’s would produce a trajectory like that.
DeleteI feel that I need to preface this smart-ass remark with the fact that I've never handled a firearm in my life, on account of being afraid of 'em. Not for the "Oh it so scawwy" factor, but rather "Dear God, if I do anything wrong I'm lucky if I'm the only one who gets hurt". Just enough to realize they aren't toys.
ReplyDeleteThat said... Is that diagram just an instruction on where to aim at certain ranges to hit someone in the junk? Accounting for a little bit of gravity, that 100 looks like a cereal box voucher for a sex change to me.
If the rifle is set to hit at 150, the impact will be a bit high from dot at 100. However, most register at 100. Due to the height of the reticle above bore, there is a convergent angle described betwixt the sight plane, and bore plane. As a projectile does NOT fly flat (it is acted upon by gravity), the ballistic curve on a flat and level range causes the projectile to cross the sight plane as ot is sent to intersect the distant target, thusly falling back into the sight plane at the registered range.
DeleteMuch simplified and more ado about that. These graphics just indicate to ignore the dot, and put the feet standing on your ring for a mass effect hit.
With a 36 yard zero, the 1st sight picture will have the impact inches higher than the retical, like the belly. Using the 36 yrd zero, puting the retical on the sternum will put the impact between the pelvis and upper chest from zero out to 300-325 yards. That is a battle zero. Then you actually shoot paper for precision record keeping, at 25 yard increments (or 50) noting exactly where your impact is. Record on card stock (or something) so you will know very closely where you will hit between zero and 325ish yards. This is how you track the trajectory of your bullet. A 5.56 or .223 has a rather shallow rainbow trajectory. Then tape it to your stock so you can reference it instantly. You will need a laser range finder to actually know what range your target is. With practice you'll need it less.
DeleteThis is one of many ways to sight your rifle. Yes it takes ammo and time. For some it's fun, for others it's drudgery. It's rather important if you have bad interactions with hostile or unfriendly "enemies". Have a smiley face day.
I was friends with a u s army sergeant, who fought in iraq and received the purple heart for a particularly brutal little firefight. His comment to me was the same, the 5.56/223 to about 200 m.
ReplyDeleteAnd beyond that, he had to climb up on the fifty.
I get 0.9MOA from my 77gr coming out of a 14.5" barrel @ 2824fps. MOA drop from 100yd zero:
ReplyDelete@200yds: 3.0,
@300yds: 7.0,
@400yds: 11.8,
@500yds: 17.6, and
@600yds(1218fps): 24.5.
I don’t get it. Outta my AR with a match 20” barrel…I was about 100 FPS slower than that. Accuracy was around 1.1 to 1.2 MOA. My trajectory was a tad steeper than that.
DeleteSo I bought one of those el cheapo Ruger American bolt guns with a 16” factory pipe and it’s about the same as your little AR for accuracy but still about 100 FPS slower.
I hear guys like you all the time, K… hell - I see them at the range all the time…and I can’t get that kind of performance from none of my 223s. What gives???
And while I’m pissing and moaning - be it resolved: Berger bullets are shite and don’t shoot! I will not tolerate any contradictory evidence, or be reasoned with! Anybody experiencing exceptional performance with them is at the top of my shit list!
😡
overpressure. I load these myself. My goal was to be supersonic at 600yds, f**k the consequences.
DeleteAgree - bergers suck. I use 77gr SMK.
And, not all barrels are created equal. Mine is a LWRC hammer-forged.
Throw shade at the 223 / 5.56 all you like, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a .177 air rifle let along. 22lr or a 223/556 at 200, 300 or whatever! You do you. I’ll remain the nut behind the butt. I’m allergic to lead, no matter how big the pill or how fast it comes at me. No thanks !!!
