I currently have a Ruger RedHawk in 45 LC. Rugers are built like tanks and I could load that thing up to the nads and seriously push .44 magnum ballistics. But I shoot patty cake cast lead loads. A 454 Casull would be even MOAR overkill. But - if I understand it correctly - the 454 can also shoot 45 long Colt… the same way ya can shoot 38 Special in a 357. And lordy… I DO love those Bisley style guns…! The versatility appeals to me.
Any a youse guys shooting the big cannons? Can ya hit anything with ‘em?
Ruger Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull . Send the cylinder to TK Customs for machining, and chamfer. Then you can shoot 454, 45 LC and 45 ACP with moon clips

ReplyDeleteI've had a 7.5" super Redhawk in 44 mag since the 80s. It will handle the top end of the recipe book from any loading manual. I'm just 1 shy of 70 and thought it would be nice to shoot 44 specials from a properly chambered wheelgun so just ordered a Ruger Bisley in .44 special. That's a strong piece and if you take a 210gr load up to the top of the recipe book, you are not short of the 10 mm at all. Get all Elmer on it.
ReplyDelete460 s&w can shoot all 3 of those loads!
ReplyDeleteI had a .44 mag Blackhawk back in the day, as well as a Winchester lever gun in .44 too. Sold both to finance Christmas one year when we were living paycheck to paycheck. Never got another. Handloaded all my .44 mag loads to .44 special power just cause I'm a weenie on recoil and there was nothing that big I needed to shoot anyway. Now I have a whole battery of .45 colt revolvers and once again load up big soft loafing lead slugs at ~800 fps. With the 8" barrel I can pretty much hit whatever I want.
ReplyDeleteCleaning out the garage I found a whole stash of .44 mag ammo, now I got the itch to go buy another. Dang. But I hear good things about the .41 mag too. And yeah, Ruger for the win. Their pistols are built like brick shithouse.
I've always been interested in .41 mag, as well. Bought a 460 s&w years ago. Love it. Have run 45 colt, 454 and of course 460 thru it. A fine source of fun to occupy your time.
DeleteAn ORDINARY 45 Colt, 250gr, 900-950 fps will kill almost anything. You're right about uploading your Ruger. From what I've read, you can run 350 grainers up into the 1300?-1400? range with the only ill effects are on your wrists. Pretty sure that's charging grizzly/water buffalo stopping power. You MIGHT not be in a position like that in this lifetime. But wudda I know, you might have a late life crisis and have to march up north to piss off a grizzly. Take yer Ruger...and a 338 mag.
ReplyDeleteI've got a standard Blackhawk 45 colt with a 45 ACP cylinder. That thing is deadly accurate. You just have to do your part. And I'm not sure which cylinder is more accurate, to give you something else to think about.
