Better for you even for a kid than what they put in cough syrup today. The old docs knew their stuff and knew patients didn't have a lot of money to spend on healthcare. For it's time it was as expensive as it is today.
That's the medicine my mother fed me in the mid-1950s when she put me to bed along with a sauce pan of steaming Vick's Vaporub in water on a hot plate on the floor of my bedroom. I sweated like crazy, but felt great in the morning.
We used to have a hot-steam vaporizer with a reservoir in front of the steam jet that was to be filled with Vick's Mentholatum. The room would smell and feel like a ghetto sauna after a few hours!
Dig on the phone numbers! Back in the day, the first two numbers were the first two letters of the location of the phone company "central office." 'Still can remember the phone number from when I was a kid. FR (Freeport) 8-xxxx...
