The shredded stuff is shredded cabbage with shredded carrot, usually with vinegar dressing and often boiled. Old place i worked, the eatery down the street served it everyday with the lunch special. That was the Polish/Canadian club. Kind of tastes like a vinegar coleslaw thats limp and warm.
I'll eat it, but then I'm old and will eat anything, almost, for the variety/excitement/adventure. There are interesting and wonderful gastronomic adventures out there, just waiting for you to stumble across them. Like yer folks told you, "You have to at least taste it!!"
