It seems odd to roll the laundry in with the kitchen but why not? It’s weird - when I was a kid the laundry was ALWAYS downstairs. Now everyone and their dogs have them upstairs and the washer dryer is one unit. Nobody has a clothes line anymore…

Upper left,,is that an intercom? Radio?
ReplyDeleteFreezer looks to have a step down bar for kicking it open?
Looks like the DW controls and stovetop are above the DW,
IDK when vent a hoods started being an every day thing, but I'm not seeing one. The laundry going in the kitchen makes sense in a way. Water and electricity are there, not everyone had a washing machine, houses weren't necessarily layed out for them back then,, and that setup solves a space problem,,
Now where the Hell is she going to put the stuff that goes in the cabinet that washing machine fills up?
Look at how the faucet is mounted. Wiping the sink down would be easy, faucet repair/replacement,, probably not.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was living in Ireland we had a combo clothes washer/comdenser dryer in the kitchen of our country council digs. That was the norm. Dish washers were just a gaget the Yanks had.
ReplyDeleteHrrrrrmmmmmmm... I have never heard of a condensor dryer...? I will have to look that up on the internet...
DeleteFrom L to R: dryer, sink/plumbing/storage, clothes washer (look at all the controls, a dish washer has much less), stove/oven.
ReplyDelete60's or 70's idea of future kitchen?
Combined washer/dryer? Sounds like a problem waiting for an opportunity. Us po folk have a washer AND a dedicated dryer. We're all grand and Texasy like that n sheeeit.
If it was Putrid Green or Vile Orange it might have been from the 70s, Mike. That Robin's Egg Blue... isn't that 50's?
DeleteGlen,
DeleteI'll have you know that the avocado green stove & upright freezer that were in the house when I took it over are still in use. These two appliances were purchased in.... 1970. Ugly, yes. Dependable, absolutely!

btw, the stove is just like this only in green:

Justin has it right, most old homes weren't laid out for clothes washers and didn't have water lines plumbed out for them. Putting it in the kitchen was the answer. My parents' house was like that and I never thought twice until I grew up and went house shopping with my new wife. At which point it was in the garage. It was the 3rd or 4th house before we had the now standard laundry room with washer and dryer side by side.
ReplyDeleteWhat time frame would that be, Don? In my neck of the woods, EVERYONE was in the basement by the mid to late 60's...
DeleteBut you lived in an area with basements. My grandmothers place had it in the garage.
DeleteExile1981
Parents' house was probably built in the late 40's early 50's. No basements in our area - too close to the coast, swampy area, you dig down more than several feet and it floods with water. Same time frame for my first house, second house was built in the 70's and stuff was in the garage. Again, no basements.
DeleteIt just makes sense to have the laundry facilities upstairs. That's where the clothes/sheets/towels are used and stored. No one has a clothes line because most HOAs have outlawed them.
