Thursday Babble: Retard Range Day With The Pea Shooters

Well I gotta say my state of readiness round the castle is nothing short of despicable! I’m finally caught up on my pistol reloading… but my rifles are another story. My pea shooters are a top cause for concern that I really need to jump on. There’s no excuse for it really - I have tons of supplies but have just been too damn lazy to get off my butt and DO it!

My newest acquisition is one of those Ruger Americans in .223 that is set up to do AR mags. Before I bought it I checked out the reviews on OyToob and they seem to be drawing raves from the gunnies.

I think I paid $800.00 and change for it. The reviews are pretty solid but a few were just retarded. The guy I love to hate on OyTube is a hick that draws a big dot on a paper plate, bench rests on a half rotted cable reel, and shoots a 5 shot group. He’ll get a 5” group with 3 in one hole and two fliers and then go, “Lookit the three shots!!! If ya ignore the 2 fliers it’s a sub- MOA gun!!! A-HYUK! A-HYUK A-HYUK!” I always down voat his vids and I finally learned how to block them off my feed. That’s simply not how it works. ALL the shots count. Sorry, dude. And rather than saying it’s a one inch gun, ya want to give an accuracy range to be more realistic. When I originally set up the gun…it seemed to do about 0.6~1.2 MOA off the bench will a variety of ammo. But… I wasn’t happy with the way I had the little gun set up so I took the scope off and remounted it. I confirmed a quick chit house zero and moved out to 200m to establish my mechanical zero.

Aaaaaaand…it’s a sub-MOA rifle, A-HYUK A-HYUK A-HYUK!
I measured that one at 0.873”, 200m (220 yards) off the bench.
Ammo was my out house practice reloads with mixed brass, 77gr HPBT’s.
Holy shit!

Pardon my fwench… but that’s not bad for a bargain basement gun. The scope is a Swarovski 3x9 that’s worth more than the gun. I did 20 rounds from the sitting position and got 7 or 8 out of ten in a 6” bull which isn’t great… but fairly good for me considering how out of practice I am. My home made nylon sling and mag pouch on the stock are holding up great. It’s coming along, I’m off to a good start anyhoo. I have a good feeling about it.

Larry’s pretty much on the money with this.
My problem with him is he shoots too much steel!
I’d like to see how he does with a benched gun
and match loads on paper…

This another of my 223’s that I bought on impulse several years back. One of the gun club duffers brought one by to shoot because he wasn’t having any luck with it. He wanted me to shoot it and see what was wrong with it and I went 5 out of 5 with it, off my hind feet at the 6” gong at 100m. I tried to buy it off him but he was overjoyed to see that it could shoot…he just had to put some trigger time in. I really get a split personality going with this gun. It shoots about 1.2 ~ 1.5 MOA with my out house practice ammo which isn’t great…but off hand, and from the positions… I do remarkably well with it. It deserves a good optic too… like the one Larry in the vid is using. I’d like a compact 2x8 with enough eye relief to allow my back up flipper iron sights. But… I haven’t got one. I DO have an Eotech red dot though… so I threw that on and got a good mechanical zero at 50 yards with bulk green tips.

So all I have is a rough 50 yard “battlefield” zero with the XCRL for now… but the irons are another matter. I ran out of green tip ammo  before I could zero them.

Any squaddies or AR gurus here?
Those flip-up irons are *probly* much like those on an AR.
Do any of you guys remember the graduations or increments per
click on those sights?
I gotta move 5” high and about 5” left to get the irons zeroed too…

I should have the irons and red dot both sighted in on the next trip out. It’s been years since I shot the little boogaloonian and I fell in love with it all over again. If you are looking for an AR alternative I would recommend one. These XCRL’s feel so good in the hands, they balance and handle like champs and they shoot half decently too! They’re pricey as hell…but whatever. Gawd, how I’ve missed iron sights too… By the next trip out everything should be good. The red dot’s dialled in, and if it dies I’ll be able to shoot the irons right through it without having to take anything off.

I must a burnt off about 50 rounds so I decided to check out my favourite campsite and maybe slam a hot brew and have a pipe.

Welcome to Forward Firebase Filthie!
Errrrr… watch where ya step…

Y’know… I shoulda brought the camper out, or thrown a fart sack in the back of the Dawgmobile and stayed the night and shot tomorrow too. The snow was drifting down, there was no wind… and all I needed was a jug of coffee and a campfire.

I hope you guys all get a chance to hit the range soon too.

Cheers!

  1. It's practice, don't worry about it.
Reduce the flyers on the next round of range time.

    1. Ever try Flowmax, Cederq? I can pish across 40 feet and fill a chamber pot without spilling a drop! Highly recommended!

  3. Are the targets moving around quickly, seeking cover and shooting back?

    1. I think my accuracy would definitely open up a bit if they were shooting back…😂
