I Think I’ll Pass, Larry….

Hrrmppffff. 🤨

I like ballistic oddities as much as the next guy… but… yeah. I think I’ll pass. An expensive, big bejeezus bullet poking down range at really close ranges doesn’t really do anything for me. Fact is I personally don’t have any use or interest in the 300 Blackout either… or any of the other AR15 oddballs with the possible exception of the 6.5 Grendel.

But mind you - all I do is punch paper these days as a gun club duffer. Maybe the squaddies or cops might have a use for it..? Any thoughts - leave ‘em in the comments and we can fight about it there!

  1. The only thing that would make that even mildly interesting to me would be if suppressors were allowed on rifles while hunting. Then, subsonic has some appeal.

But if suppressors are illegal (as a general rule), then give me a round that stays above 2000fps out to 200 yards so I benefit from flat trajectory and reliable expansion.

  2. What specialty projectiles are available in .338?

  3. Like a shiny new fishing lure, the whole purpose of a new cartridge is to sell gear to guys.

.338 ARC - "Psst, hey dude. I know you already have 12 AR rifles. But you still need 1 more, cause look!! Shiny new caliber. You know you want it, go ahead and drop another grand or two on something you wife doesn't need to know about."

The guy in the vid defeats the entire purpose of it by mentioning a .45 ACP in a carbine with a suppressor. He claims the .338 ARC has more range, but if you needed more range why are you shooting sub-sonic ammo thru a can? I'd rather have the .45 ACP carbine myself.

  4. 338 ARC, at what? $7 per round? 220gr, 300 BO does the same thing, much cheaper. 300 BO is as exotic as I'm willing to go. I've paid as much as $1.50 per round for premium ammo and as little as $0.50 for ball. Then, only in an AR. It's my house defence round, much better than 5.56, when using social loads, plus it can come in a truly compact, lightweight, unit. "They say" it'll knock down a deer, reliably out to 150 yards.

    1. Yup. I watch Johnny’s Reloading Bench on OyTube and I think he was after deer in bush country with the Blackout and it did alright.

  5. Pass.

I gave up on arguing the merits of various calibers years ago. What I really care about is the cost of the ammo, the cost of the firearm, and the accuracy of same while resting in my mitts.

    1. Exactly.

Ughhhh… Unless you’re hunting, .338 bullets are going to cost a bloody fortune. And the variety/availability is probly gonna suck too.

  6. I do have one oddball caliber AR. It's a .458 SOCOM. Pretty much a 45/70 with middlin' loads. 325gn Hornady FTX at ~1950 fps. Does it shoot "flat"? Not even close. But it is accurate out to 200 yards which is a far as I've tried it. The throw weight is about six times that 55gn boolit from a regular 5.56 AR and what it hits downrange will confirm that.
