RV Shopping

I better make an offer before Cederq beats me to it!!!
๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Oh my garsh… the warmth of wood, indeed. All a fella needs with that is a matching period correct boat, some rods… and he’d be set.

Last time I saw her my mom was prattling about stupid people like Cederq spending outlandish money on lavish palaces on wheels with price tags that’d make a Texas oilmnan gag. She’s really losing her marbles now… she forgets that she and Dad spent more money on RVs than the wife and I spent on our house. And that’s not including their vacation property in Arizona. And they were the small fry at their RV club, there were folks with big $300,000.00 diesel pushers with marble countertops and opulent chitters.

I wonder what’s going to happen to that market as the affluent boomers die off and go to hell? I hear Harley Ferguson is going to be on the ropes as it’s market demographic - the old Boomers - are dying off and the Pepsi kids have little or no interest in heavy metal choppers and cruisers.

I totally get that. I know for me personally, I prefer the smaller RVs and I’d still be in a tent if my old bones could take it. My parents were disgusted with my little pop up A-frame trailer because it was very light and basic. Whatever…

I suppose that I do have a little RV snobbery going on… I just love this little retro gem. The Silent Generation knew how to live, and live well…on less. Many of their kids never learned anything from them.

I will not make the same mistake…

  1. I had to take "Filed Biology" in high school, and the "classrooms" were two 40ft Bolus Aero travel trailers at ranch to the south of town. These things had long since left the raod and had been set up as "casitas" ("guest houses" for the non-wild westerner) for full-time living. That being said, almost NOTHING was done to the interiors, and even a teenager could appreciate all the wood paneling and fine workmanship in those rigs! Not a corner was cut nor a pound spared when fleshing those things out! My only question was "What in hell kind of consumer-grade vehicle was powerful enough to PULL them???"

    1. A 2 ton, w/ Cummins diesel, 12' box truck (with work shop interior and a window or two) would handle it nicely.

  2. You can have it. I don't care for Airstreams, too heavy, too much work to keep them in shape and I don't polish my truck, you think I want to polish a trailer? Not enough usable head room and then there is the off-putting snobbery of owners.

  3. I custom built my home in an brand new cargo trailer, it has an wood stove, full kitch, shower and on demand hot water. Small and efficient, cozy beyond measure and mobile just like Jim Rockford had, but for an fraction of what AS costs!

    1. I have a 22' x 8' x 8', paneled car hauler in xlnt condition. A great start for a "mini home". Great idea, Chutes!

  4. Gorgeous. The typewriter is the finishing touch... I could maybe afford the typewriter.

I went the other direction and started with land. That way you can put up fences and signs, and enforce arbitrary and capricious rules.

  5. There's a hell of a lot of loose stuff to pack prior to moving, and I assume the couch/dining area doubles as the bedroom too? Nope, sticking with my consumer grade Forest River Vibe. Shoddy construction and one wet fart will bulge out the walls, but affordable as long as one understands these are weekend toys only and probably won't last ten years of light use.

I've looked at more expensive ones but don't really see where the quality is on them. More stuff, to be sure, but quality? It's like house hunting where the agent talks about all the crown molding while I'm noticing there's not a truly square wall or right angle in the entire house. It's all flash when what I want is simple, well built and durable. Unfortunately the wife wants flash and we compromised on what the budget will allow.

That said, hot shower and good A/C are way way way better than tent camping at my age.

  6. Well I think Pete n’ Cederq hit the nail right on the head. That is an art exhibit prepared by a gifted woodworker and perhaps an inspired interior decorator. For practicality that thing fails on all counts. I wouldn’t want to polish it or try to fish or hunt out of it either… but it is sweet to look at.
