Indeed...assuming you survive. A 2500 to 3000 foot pound hit to the head (roughly what you'd get from a 7.62x54R from a Mosin Nagant) would definitely do some damage, even if it doesn't penetrate. If it doesn't render your brain into jelly, it'd certainly break your neck.
Makes sense. Machine gunners would be a priority target for a marksman, along with anyone with a radio or anyone giving orders or who might look important.
My granddad was a combat infantry lieutenant in the first World War. JL comment reminded me of one of the first rules of battle and that is try not to look important.
Sniper gear, maybe? I had heard that those lugs were intended to hold a shrapnel shield over the eyes and face...
ReplyDeleteIt is a brow sniper plate. Supposedly, as per Toxicavenger's guess, it render's the helmet reistant to high caliber rifle fire.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want to test that.
Imagine the headache.

DeleteI recall seeing a WW1 picture where a Machine gunner was wearing one

DeleteThanks for that JL. I’ve never seen that before…
