Got This Stuck Halfway In My Memory Hole

When the wife and I were kids we scrimped and saved for a motorcycle trip to Banff. We stayed at a hotel like this one right on the Transcanada through town. Rates were dirt cheap but it was still clean. We had a ball despite the lack of lavish funds.

I’m not sure if that hotel was the Highlander or something else. I seem to remember going by on business and they tore it down later…? I haven’t been to Calgary in 100 years… if this rings bells with anyone please let me know…

  1. They tour it down in 2004 to make room for the weird homedespot. Back in the 90's it was popular with the more mature SAIT crowd. It played music a little quiter and drink prices were cheaper than going to Jesabells (now locolous) which was right across from campus and had much pricer drinks. There also used to be a gas station kitty corner from dorm that would sell booze from under the counter at 3am if you were desperate enough.

    1. Okay… and was there an old style hamburger joint just a little further west of it…?

    2. If your talking about Peter's drive in that did burgers and shakes that was east of campus a bit, its still there. There was an old burger place west of the highlander right beside motel village but it was closed in the early 90's when I lived in the area. It was gone by the late 90's.

That was a lifetime ago Glenn,

  3. The Highlander was my fave in the mid 70's, back when the bars were enormous 200 or more seats, had great vibe, good live local bands. It had a weird mix of the University crowd, the SAIT guys and just regular folk. Mandatory stop after Trade school when I went.
